NEXUS Cards

Even if you are eligible to travel on just a NEXUS Card, we strongly recommend that you travel with a valid passport when travelling outside Canada, even to the United States, as some officers may ask you to prove your citizenship and/or permanent residence status linked to your membership.

Travelling TO the United States (From Canada):

• Canadian and American citizens can use their NEXUS cards (without their passports) when they are pre-clearing Customs and Border Protection. 
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Canadian Permanent Resident with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport and any applicable visas or an ESTA to enter the United States.
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Green Card holder with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport AND a valid Green Card to enter the United States.
• Passengers who are travelling from an airport that does not offer preclearance must travel with a valid passport.

Travelling FROM the United States (Entering Canada):

• Canadian and American citizens can use their NEXUS cards (without their passports) when entering Canada from the United States. 
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Green Card holder with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport AND a valid Green Card to enter Canada. 
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Canadian Permanent Resident with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport AND a valid PR Card to enter Canada. 

Travelling FROM Non-U.S. International Destinations (Entering Canada):

• Canadian citizens can use their NEXUS cards (without their passports) when entering Canada from international destinations
  • American citizens can only use their NEXUS cards (without their passports) when entering Canada from Mexico. American citizens entering Canada from other countries must carry a valid passport.
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Canadian Permanent Resident with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport AND a valid PR Card to enter Canada. 
  • If you are a NEXUS member as a Green Card holder with another citizenship, you are still required to present a valid passport AND a valid Green Card to enter Canada.
